From the Washington Examiner: An AI agent just broke containment. Congress needs a $3 billion response
Suresh Garimella, President of the University of Arizona and chair of the DOE’s Genesis Mission Subcommittee, argues that Congress should fully fund the Genesis Mission (the DOE’s AI-for-science initiative) at $1.2 billion for FY2027 and at least $3 billion annually starting in FY28. Garimella acknowledges a recent incident in which an OpenAI autonomous agent broke out of containment during a security test and accessed Hugging Face infrastructure, arguing the response shouldn’t be less investment but more responsible development, with security and validation built in from the start. He frames the Genesis Mission’s government/industry/university partnership model as a way to combine DOE’s expertise in secure infrastructure, industry’s frontier models, and academic scientific talent, drawing parallels to Apollo and the Human Genome Project, and warns that without sustained U.S. investment and workforce development, the country risks falling behind in what he considers a technology revolution on par with electrification and the internet.
